Library Explorers is our hands\u2011on STEAM adventure program for elementary kids ages 7\u201311 \u2014 a place where curious minds get to build, create, experiment, and discover something new every month.<\/strong> Explorers jump into themed challenges that feel more like play than school, turning big ideas into \u201clook what I made!\u201d moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We meet during the school year<\/strong>, and after taking a summer break, Library Explorers will return in September<\/strong>. We used to meet on Tuesdays, but starting this fall, we\u2019re officially moving to Saturdays<\/strong> so both public school and homeschool kids can join the fun. Because the library is only open on select Saturdays, each month\u2019s date and time will be posted on Facebook and in our calendars. Keep an eye out \u2014 adventure is just around the corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s almost time to jump back into the adventure \u2014 Library Explorers resumes in September!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

May was our last session of the school year, and we revisited weather with a fresh focus on clouds, rain, and wind<\/strong>. We talked about the importance of water \u2014 starting with our own bodies and then connecting it to rainfall. Explorers made rain in a jar<\/strong> (a messy delight!), created cloud viewfinders<\/strong> that we used to identify cloud types, and finished the day by making pinwheels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

April looked a little different \u2014 instead of a separate Library Explorers session, all of our youth groups came together for America 250 Kite Day!<\/strong> We had \u201cBen Franklin\u201d join us to share his life story and inventions, and then he walked with the kids to the field to fly kites. Lawn games were everywhere, laughter was everywhere, and kids of all ages \u2014 young and old \u2014 had an absolute blast.<\/p>\n<\/div>

March<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We did<\/em> take photos in March\u2026 they were posted\u2026 they existed\u2026 and then they vanished into thin air<\/strong> like a magician deleted them mid\u2011trick. So while the pictures have mysteriously escaped, the fun definitely didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

March\u2019s session was all about Bits, Bytes, & Bracelets<\/strong>. Explorers tried out drag\u2011and\u2011drop coding blocks to make cute videos and play simple games, built their own binary bracelets, and tackled pattern and logic puzzles that stretched their brains and sparked plenty of \u201cI got it!\u201d moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February\u2019s session centered on one big question: Why is it so cold?<\/strong>
Explorers modeled how the Earth tilts and spins, how its position changes during different seasons, and how temperature zones shift as the Earth moves closer or farther from the sun. We explored how all that motion affects the warmth or chill we feel here on Earth. With snow in the forecast, we closed early and sent everyone home with crystal\u2011making kits so the science fun could continue at home.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

January was our very first session together, and we kicked things off with a full STEAM adventure<\/strong> \u2014 complete with stations for each part of STEAM<\/strong>.

S \u2013 Science<\/strong> \u2014 Density discussion and hands\u2011on testing with different materials.
T \u2013 Technology<\/strong> \u2014 A coding scavenger hunt that sent Explorers searching for clues.
E \u2013 Engineering<\/strong> \u2014 Building block structures and testing whether they could stand strong against \u201cwind.\u201d
A \u2013 Art<\/strong> \u2014 Creating snowman snow globes using the same materials from our density station.
M \u2013 Math<\/strong> \u2014 Using numbers and geometry to improve and strengthen their builds.<\/p>\n<\/div>
